There are mechanics here that you still cannot find in modern 4x games. Multiplayer is local LAN/Hamachi only however. It goes on sale for the price of a cup of coffee frequently. It's a game worth picking up. SEV does require a decent amount of tweaking to get it to run on a modern Windows computer (Windows 7 and up), When I was starting my multiplayer series, I made a video to help people with their initial setup, optimize it, and fix some common crashes: https://youtu.be/mw0o-hADE-I. Game keeps on crashing for no apparent reason.. I know I don't have too many hours on this game through Steam, but I used to play this a lot when I was younger (along with SE4 and Starfury). This game pairs the solid empire-building gameplay from SE4 with the 3D graphics and high-octane combat of Starfury to make for an epic experience.I was actually surprised to find that Starfury wasn't on the Steam store. For those of you who haven't played it, it's the missing link between SE4 and SE5, and explains a lot of the changes. Starfury is a third-person space simulator, with themes borrowed from SE4 but with fully 3D graphics and excellent combat. The developers borrowed heavily from Starfury when making SE5, which is why the previous SE game isn't anything like it.It's not bad though, just different. Designing ships is more like Starfury than SE4 -- you don't just pick components, you have to choose which ones get damaged first (outer hull) and which ones get damaged last (inner hull). In addition, each ship has a limited number of armor slots (varies depending on what race you use), so no two ships are ever going to be identical. The combat is different too. Instead of slower, turn-based combat, it's a real-time 3D arena, with the ships you designed flying in whatever formation you put them in and using the weapons you personally added to them. You have less control over your ships than you do in SE4; you can't tell a ship when to fire, they auto-target and auto-fire when close enough, but the controls are smooth and intuitive. Plus, there's now fully developed ground combat, which SE4 didn't have.In short, yes it's very different from SE4, but it's still a solid game in its own right. If the transition from 2D to 3D is too much to take, try and hunt down Starfury to get used to the new universe. It'll help a lot.. Dis geim iz de shizzls. Almost as good as IV.. Run's amazing, 50+ FPS on Windows 8 in windowed mode; go to SE5 folder/data/HUDSettings and edit Width and Height. When you run SE5, click Setup and change Display Drive to your graphics cards, Video mode to Windowed, Video memory usage to Safe. (Graphics and Background left on High ;)).Nvidia Settings for SE5 executable Manage 3D settings, Program Settings:Maximum pre-rendered frames: 1Power management mode: Prefer Maximum PerformanceTriple buffering: OnVertical sync: OnDunno how much of the above is necissary or if it actually did anything, but the above is what I cobbled together from over the interwebs to get good fps.AND DO NOT FORGET TO D/L BALANCE MOD!Also, toss in some shipsets and spice it up.. Blindingly addictive, albeit with moments of glitchyness. The enemy AI can sometimes choose strategies that cause its own civilisation to stagnate (remind you of anyone?) & some visual errors can lead to crashes. Save often!. I cannot play this game. The screen resolution will not adjust according to my settings, it does not go fullscreen (thus making it imposibble to use the buttons at the bottom of the screen), and there is a constant flickering white light every second or so that is nonstop. The game also lags, even when I am not online - the cursor skips, the screen movements stutter. I can play every other game I own from Steam (all 128 of them, minus this one) just fine on this computer.. Might be old but still fun to play, although I ain't the hugest fan of pure turn based!. A perspective of SEV I am using a 2011, I5 macbook pro with parallels and XPsp3. First, tech research is handled a little differently in SEV. If you favored SE 4’s R&D scheme it might take some getting used to Imho. When I first sparked up SEV my FPS would slow down and it would frustratingly hang up calculating round outcomes. However after loading the “Balance Mod v 120+ and “Dark Nova 5” frame rates have picked up on my macbook. The new R&D system and empire automation options are growing on me. In summary, I recommend this game if you don’t mind a little learning curve the game is very customizable with lots of dept …just one more turn is the chant... trust me!
